Bart Pierik (b. 1985) has been working at the VSNU as a public affairs adviser and spokesperson since March 2017. He maintains contact with the press and provides them with information regarding all of the prevalent themes within the universities. He is also responsible for maintaining good relationships with the Dutch government, national political parties, organisations and figures, as well as other relevant stakeholders, such as scientific organisations.
Bart earned his BA (Cultural Sciences) and MSc (Public Policy) from Maastricht University. He chose a political focus during his studies, completing a work placement in the 2006 national election campaign and writing his thesis on the impact of populism on government policy.
After obtaining his degree, Bart worked as a policy officer for the Labour Party (PvdA) parliamentary group in the Dutch House of Representatives. His duties in this role included assisting various members of parliament in all their political activities, with a particular focus on social affairs and higher education. After four years he was asked to serve as policy adviser to the State Secretary for Infrastructure and the Environment, a position which he held for three years.
