The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) is the employers’ organisation for 14 member universities. As at 31 December 2017, the Dutch universities employed 54,475 staff, equivalent to 46,554 FTEs in permanent or temporary employment.
Staff can be categorised into roughly two groups: academic staff (WP) and support and management staff (OBP). In the tables published by the VSNU, academic staff are further subdivided into professors (HL), associate professors (UHD), assistant professors (UD), other WP and PhD candidates. No further subdivision is made for the OBP category.
Universities believe that it is crucial to provide their staff with an attractive place to work. Universities offer good terms of employment, including flexible working hours, and provide staff with opportunities for personal development. See also: Universities as employers
