Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities

The VSNU negotiates with the Labour Unions on the compensation and benefits of the University staff (with the exception of the Executive Board). Compensation and benefits cover matters such as salary, leave, pension and social security.

Negotiators representing the VSNU employer association and the unions reached a negotiation settlement on the 2021 Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) on 15 June 2021. The term of the collective labour agreement runs from 1 January 2021 to 31 March 2022 and applies to over 55,000 employees in the university sector. The text of the negotiation settlement is available here. The collective bargaining parties will put the negotiation settlement to their members and will endeavour to sign a final collective labour agreement by no later than 1 August.

The compensation and benefits agreed with the Labour Unions appear in the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch universities. The caoNU (the latest version of the Collective Labour Agreement), valid from 1 January 202o, can be downloaded via the menu on the right-hand side.

The universities and Labour Unions together launched a ‘public friendly’ version of the Collective Labour Agreement. This website provides a general outline of the Collective Labour Agreement and clearly sets out the most important information on employment conditions.
